Taking Up The Whole Armor Of God
The breastplate was a central part of the Roman soldier’s armor—it provided protection for the torso, which contains vital organs like the heart, lungs and so on. Without a breastplate, a soldier would be asking for death, as any attack could instantly become fatal. With a sturdy breastplate, the very same attacks become ineffective and useless, as blows glance off the armor.
What is righteousness?
Righteousness is simply being in ‘right’ or good standing with God. There are those who trust in their own abilities and works to gain good standing with God and subsequently never meet with the standard of His holiness, and there are those who by faith gain that good standing by the imputed or transferred righteousness which comes by believing in the atoning death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is called the ‘Righteousness which is by faith’ (Phil.3:9). God in His goodness has made the righteousness that comes by faith in Christ the only means by which humans can obtain it! Paul aligns righteousness to the breastplate because it deals with the heart of the gospel and grace of God. If by trickery or seduction, Satan can manipulate us to think that there is even one hint of goodness in ourselves outside of Christ – our breastplate is removed and our heart is open to deception and lies! When we stand against our enemy, we stand in the goodness, and power of another – it is not our own!
